May 29, 2020· Using sand in your aquarium can help make your cleaning duties easier, as it doesn''t let waste filter down between the particles as easily as gravel or crushed coral, for example. This keeps debris on top, and if there is sufficient water movement in the tank, the waste will be caught and removed by the aquarium filter .

Jul 08, 2008· Just added some silica sand to my 54L tank. The water is slightly cloudy but i guess that will settle over time, however my gold fish keep sucking it up and dispersing it everywhere. My plec does not look to impressed with it and neither do the snails. The minnows are to busy chasing each other to notice. Is this ok to use as a substrate?

I haven''t had any problems with my silica sand raising or lowering my ph. I use Bullseye to get my ph down. I also have a couple pieces of driftwood in my ram tank. Is there anywhere you can go find a piece of driftwood that would work in your tank? Much cheaper that way, lol. You just have to clean it really well. Good luck.

Aquarium Sand vs Gravel: the Pros and Cons Written by Randy Martin. While preparing to setup my new fish tank I had to decide between sand or gravel for my aquarium substrate. I researched all the pros and cons between the two. So sand vs gravel? Some fish species prefer a sand substrate. Sand looks natural and beautiful.

Sep 07, 2007· I use silica sand or pool filter sand in all of my tanks and I would never use anything else. It is natural looking, better on the fish, and easier to clean. The main thing is turning it over every week or combing it weekly to prevent it from creating pockets under it.

Aug 01, 2018· You sure can. The sand I have used most often in my aquarium is play sand from the home improvement store, which is quite literally cleaned and sifted beach sand. To collect it yourself means you will need to sift it in order to ensure no foreign ...

Feb 22, 2008· The fact is that quartz sand (and the walls of our aquarium and even the silicone rubber which is the most soluble of the lot) do not dissolve enough in seawater to be measurable If silica sand contributed in any significant way to dissolved silica, then you would expect there to be big differences in the silica concentration around sandy ...

May 22, 2020· You can choose between play, blasting, and silica pool sand for your aquarium. Play sand is inexpensive and comes in several colors and textures for an attractive tank. Blasting sand has a more consistent grain size and color and is more refined compared to play sand but is also more expensive than the latter.

Nov 21, 2016· However, if your tank includes fish that like to burrow and scavenge in the sand, they will do the job of filtering the substrate. Sand has a couple of other benefits when compared to gravel. Many aquarium owners think it looks more natural, better mimicking the lakes or riverbeds that make up fish'' natural habitats.

Jul 25, 2019· Play Sand: This is the most inexpensive way to give a great natural look to your fish tank. Play sand can be purchased at most hardware stores for as little as 3 a bag. The varying colors and grain sizes make for an attractive substrate. Blasting Sand: Again, this is an inexpensive way to give your tank a natural feel. The only difference ...

May 22, 2009· The silica sand will eventually fall through the "cracks" between the flourite and would end up on the bottom. What sort of plants do you have? All my planted tanks have plain silica sand with no flourite. Check out the Sorority Tank in my signature and you''ll see that good growth is definitely possible with plain silica as a substrate.

May 30, 2014· Randy HolmesFarley, an aquarium enthusiast dosed silica in his 90gallon reef tank for two years and found levels would consistently return to zero after just 4 days, see the graph at right for more detail. 3 In our oceans, active consumption of Silica by Diatoms in surface waters tend to leave concentration levels of just a few mM, while depths of 1000 meters and below can reach silica ...

Another thing to keep in mind: If you''re cleaning your sand with very cold water, or leave the sand overnight in the cold, the sand can cause a quick temperature drop when added to an existing tank and shock the fish. Be sure to keep the sand in room temp for awhile to get the sand temp back up or add some warmer water to the sand. This ...

Before listening to the podcast, I had 2 pretty firm beliefs about the use of sand in a saltwater aquarium: Belief # 1: Aragonite sand in a saltwater aquarium can have a beneficial effect as a buffer and calcium source. Belief # 2: Sand containing silicate could be disastrous in a saltwater aquarium because it will fuel the growth of problem algae.

Nov 07, 2009· i use silica sand, i''m sure its the same a kids sand. I was worried about ammonia pockets, and apparently silica sand doesn''t produce ammonia (someone will enlighten me, the father in law says so), anyways i just sweep through the sand with my fingers every month.

Jan 10, 2013· Can you use pool filter sand for saltwater aquariums? Reason I ask is, I was selling my 72 bowfront setup but I have decided to keep it since there is no interest. I had the tank setup with goldfish and was using pool filter sand for the substrate. Just picked up a reef capable led from the 225 part out sale and I really like the light.

I also am using silica sand in my tank, I got it from the local Cement Plant. They sell it as mason sand. Got a 100lb bag for like 5. Did require a quite a bit of rinsing to get it clean but looks good in the tank and fish .

The sand is live, it changes fish waste to plant not make your sand smooth. Give your sand the up and down look so the extra waste collects in the lower partsgo over the bottom . Use a Python tube to go over the bottom of your tank (low Spots) your ph should raise a bit with this sand .

Freshwater aquarium sand can be pH neutral, while specialty blends are made for fish like African Cichlids that prefer hard water with a higher mineral content. Aquarium stones add accent and interest. Use one large rock or several stones arranged in groups. All of our aquarium rocks, pebbles, gravel and sand are nontoxic and safe for aquarium ...

Silica/Brown/Gravel algae is a common occurrence in a newly set up aquarium. It is generally caused by too little light, an excess of silicates, an abundance of nutrients, and too little oxygen. Silicates can build up through tap water that is high in silicic acid, and silicates that leech from some types of substrates.

When to Use It. Those drawbacks don''t mean playground sand is not an option for any aquarium. If you have burrowing fish, sand is a suitable substrate. Burrowing fish will dig through the sand, preventing anaerobic pockets. Loaches and freshwater eels will dig in the substrate, hiding there between meals.

Sep 01, 2010· Instead of silica sand (which will encourage diatom growth and is VERY light, and easily moved by fish and picked up by filters), you might prefer diatomaceous earth (pool filter sand). It has very similar colors, and (if you are planting your tank) provides nutrients vital .
